In Fall 2025, Apple launched Digital ID — a new way to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from your U.S. passport, then present it with your iPhone or Apple Watch.
At launch, it works at more than 250 U.S. airports for TSA identity verification during domestic travel. You hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader, verify with Face ID or Touch ID, and only the specific information requested gets shared. You approve what’s sent each time.
A few important things to know:
- It does not replace your physical passport. You still need your passport for international travel and border crossings.
- Minnesota does not yet support digital driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet. Digital ID currently only works with U.S. passports. We’re watching for state ID support — it’s coming, but not here yet.
- Apple still recommends carrying your regular forms of identification. Think of Digital ID as an additional option, not a replacement.
What you’ll need
Before you start, make sure you have:
- An iPhone 11 or later (or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later) with the latest software installed
- An unexpired U.S. passport
- An Apple Account with two-factor authentication turned on, and your device region set to United States
- Face ID or Touch ID and Bluetooth turned on
How to set it up
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone
- Tap the + (Add) button in the top right
- Tap Driver’s License or ID Cards, then tap Digital ID
- Scan the photo page of your passport, following the on-screen prompts
- Hold your iPhone against the chip on the back of your passport so it can be read
- Take a selfie and complete a short series of head and face movements to verify it’s you
- Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to finish
It takes a few minutes, and you’ll need your physical passport in hand. Once it’s set up, your Digital ID lives in Wallet alongside your cards and passes.
Our take
This is awesome. My wife will be studying in India in January and we're definitely getting this set up as an extra way for her to present ID. I've been waiting for Minnesota to start supporting driver's licenses too. For now, it'll be very nice to only have to grab my phone or my watch when I leave.
I set mine up using my passport before a recent trip. Scanning the passport, reading the chip, and doing the quick face scan only took a few minutes, and it was simple to use at the airport. If state IDs come to Apple Wallet in Minnesota down the road, I expect I'll lean on this even more.
